A shaggy red guardian, one old pine, and a hug thirteen years in the making.

Forest Guardian finished artwork

Project overview

The tree that raised him

Drawn on a hiking trip upstate, where one particular pine had clearly been hugged before. The guardian is red because the forest that day was impossibly green, and someone had to argue.

Approach

Lime and red, turned all the way up

The boldest palette in the shop: lime ground, pine green, guardian red. The fur is built from overlapping scallops — forty-seven of them, counted during one long studio debate about whether forty-eight would be showing off.

Classrooms claimed it first (an art teacher in Queens has the 24×32"), then living rooms with plants followed. It is the extrovert of the collection and knows it.

Results

Shortlisted for a children's book cover, adopted as the mascot of a Vermont summer camp, and the piece most likely to be given to someone "who needs a hug".
