Bold art forgives bad walls but not bad frames. The good news: with colourful character prints, the rules are few and the mistakes are cheap to avoid. Here's our framer's cheat sheet.
Let the art be the loudest thing
Simple profiles win. A slim oak, black or white moulding disappears; an ornate gold one argues with your monster. When in doubt, black for contrast pieces (Night Castle), oak for warm ones (Desert Domes), white for small bright rooms.
Give it air with a mount
A 2–3" mount (mat) around the print does two jobs: it keeps condensation off the paper and gives the eye a resting place. White mounts suit nearly everything; match the mount to the lightest tone in the piece for a tailored feel.
Glass matters more than you think
Standard glass is fine for hallways; anti-glare UV glass earns its keep opposite windows. Avoid non-glare "frosted" glass on detailed pieces — it softens the linework you paid for.
Hang at the right height
Centre the piece at 57 inches from the floor — gallery standard, and it works in living rooms too. Above a sofa, leave 6–8 inches between frame and sofa back, and aim for the art to span two-thirds of the sofa's width.
